What is “Rails With Trails?” Barbara Duerk will be glad to explain. She lobbied for her passion to Governor Tim Kaine as he was preparing for his Roanoke Greenway bike ride on Thursday morning. Anyone that knows Barbara knows of her outspoken advocacy for the Greenway, biking and walking trails. Barabara wants to see Roanoke become a pedestrian and cycling friendly city.

What to do with space beside the thousands of miles of railroad tracks in the state of Virginia. There is an easy answer for that says Barbara, Advocacy Chairperson for Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, Inc.

Duerk would like to see a portion of the stimulus money designated for updating railroad infrastructure used to include biking and walking trails along railroad right-of-ways. Its been done in Ashland, Virginia. The greater Allegheny passage from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland has rails with trails. Shared bridges and tunnels make for thrilling bike riding and scenic walking excursions.

“It can be done,” says Duerk who is not the least bit shy when it comes to her passion for biking.
