Delegate Onzlee Ware Meets Deadline to Amend Campaign Filing

As of Monday afternoon Delegate Onzlee Ware had amended his 2009 filings. Ware represents most of Roanoke City in the House of Delegates 11th District.

In a letter dated June 10 from David Allen, Virginia State Board of Election’s Campaign Finance Manager, Ware had until Monday to amend his campaign filings.

According to Allen “once he complies with my request I will make a determination as to whether I consider it closed, need to request additional documentation, assess civil penalties or take the matter before the Board.”

Ware’s amendment to his 2009 filings did not address every item in the letter. There were no receipts included as Allen requested.

In a brief phone call with Mark Powell, complainant and former campaign manager for Ware’s primary opponent Martin Jeffrey, Powell said Ware’s campaign finance indiscretions were being “white washed.” Complaints to the SBE need to be received 21 days after the filing deadline to qualify for an amendment.

The SBE will meet June 25 and will decide the date of their July meeting and agenda at that time. Allen needed more time between receipt and evaluation of Ware’s amended filing and the next SBE board meeting.

Allen confirmed Tuesday that the SBE board will make determinations regarding the use of campaign funds for “personal” use, Juneteenth funding and loans, and other expenditures either questionable of not reported in past years. Ware is opposed in November by Republican candidate, Troy Bird.
