Anne Holton tours Virginia Western Community College

Anne Holton

Richmond, VA – Today, Anne Holton continued her statewide tour of colleges and community colleges in Roanoke with a visit to Virginia Western Community College. In Roanoke, Holton toured the mechatronics lab and the under-construction Center for Science and Health Professions, which was built with funds from a record higher education bond package that her husband, former governor and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine, helped pass in 2008.

Throughout the tour, Holton shared Kaine’s strategies to improve career and technical education and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculum, and emphasized Kaine’s record of investing in education. During his term, Kaine worked across the aisle to pass the largest higher education bond package in Virginia history, expanded pre-k enrollment by 40 percent, and designated nine career and technical education programs across the Commonwealth as Governor’s academies.

“As governor during the worst recession in 70 years, Tim had to make tough choices to keep Virginia’s economy on track,” said Holton. “He made $5 billion in necessary cuts to state spending—including cuts to his own salary—but Tim also made room for important investments in key areas like education and workforce development to keep the Commonwealth moving forward.”

Later this evening, Holton will attend the Smith Mountain Lake Democratic Picnic, where she will meet with supporters to discuss Kaine’s strategies to create jobs and strengthen the economy.

Previous stops on Holton’s college tour across Virginia include visits to Tidewater Community College (Virginia Beach Campus), Norfolk State University, George Mason University, Northern Virginia Community College (Woodbridge Campus), Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, Northern Virginia Community College (Annandale Campus), Rappahannock Community College, Paul D. Camp Community College, John Tyler Community College, the College of William and Mary, and Richard Bland College.
