The case involving Martin Jeffrey’s campaign manager, Mark Powell who filed simple assault charges against the Roanoke City Democratic Chair, Tony Reed was before Judge Clemens this morning at 10:00 AM. All parties involved as witnesses including Commonwealth Attorney, Don Caldwell and City Treasurer, Evelyn Powers were present.

The court date has been rescheduled for June 26th at 2:00 PM according to Mark Powell and confirmed by the General District Court. Since the Commonwealth Attorney has been subpoenaed as a witness a special judge will be called in to hear the case from outside of the 23rd judicial district.

The simple assault charge stems from  an altercation between Tony Reed, Roanoke City Democratic Committee Chair and Mark Powell, campaign manager for Democratic nominee 11th District, Martin Jeffrey. The incident occurred at the Municipal building on the April 10th filing deadline and later at Books-A-Million. Powell had demanded to see Delegate Onzlee Ware’s filing documents  as outlined in the Roanoke City Democratic Committee Bylaws. Charges were brought the following day on Saturday, April 11th at 3:26 PM and a court date was set for today. At that time Powell said that it was a personal issue between himself and the Democratic City Chair Tony Reed and is not reflective of either Ware’s or Jeffrey’s campaign.

There still remains the outstanding matter of reviewing Ware’s filing documents. The Jeffrey campaign has written to the state party chair, “Dickie” Cranwell and the Demcratic National Committee Chair, Governor Tim Kaine. Powell said he received a letter from Governor Kaine indicating that the campaign was handling the matter properly. The complaint is in the hands of Commonwealth Attorney Don Caldwell who is an intricate player in the Roanoke City Democratic Committee. It is unclear where the matter stands in the Attorney’s office or if this matter will also be moved outside of the district due to Caldwell’s close ties with the Roanoke City Democratic Committee.
