Assault Charges Dismissed Against Democratic Chair Tony Reed

ROANOKE: At a 2:00 PM General District Court hearing  five witnesses took the stand including Don Caldwell, Roanoke Commonwealth Attorney. The other witnesses included Evelyn Powers, City Treasurer, Sherman Holland, Commissioner of Revenue, Martin Jeffrey, and Mark Powell who alleged that he was assaulted by Tony Reed defendant. Reed did not take the stand.

The case was dismissed for lack of evidence to support any version of the confrontation that occurred on April 10. Since Don Caldwell was a witness in the simple assault charge by Mark Powell special prosecutor, Jill Deegan, was called in from Botetourt County. The proceedings lasted more than one hour.

The simple assault charge stems from  an altercation between Tony Reed, Roanoke City Democratic Committee Chair and Mark Powell, campaign manager for Democratic nominee 11th District, Martin Jeffrey. The incident occurred at the Municipal building on the April 10th filing deadline and later at Books-A-Million. Powell had demanded to see Delegate Onzlee Ware’s filing documents  as outlined in the Roanoke City Democratic Committee Bylaws. Charges were brought the following day on Saturday, April 11th at 3:26 PM and the court date was postponed until today.
