Blue Ridge Bicycle Club Gives Helmets In Return for Pledge

All smiles with his new helmet.

All smiles with his new helmet.

Barbara Duerk had no time to watch the entertainment at Washington Park’s Juneteenth Celebration Saturday. Come to think of it I did not see her with any food either. All I saw was a crowd around her tent as child after child was fitted with a bike helmet in return for a pledge to always wear it while riding their bikes. Parents had to promise too. Parents watched to learn how the helmet needed to be worn and secured.

The Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, Roanoke Virginia, because of a generous grant from the Virginia Department of Health, is able to implement BIKE SMART activities in the area.

Roanoke city code requires everyone 14 or younger to wear helmets when riding a bicycle. Bicycles with a maximum seat height of 25+ are prohibited from being ridden on sidewalks.  The BRBC as part of their mission to promote and encourage the use of the bicycle for transportation and recreation in southwest Virginia; to support the rights of cyclists; and to provide information in the interest of bicycling safety; distributed 150+ helmets at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, SCLC, Juneteenth celebration in Washington Park on June 13, 2009.

Saturday’s event participants and their parents learned how to adjust helmets practiced bicycle driver’s bike handling skills on the tennis courts and were shown how to fix a flat tire.  The BRBC’s next BIKE SMART helmet distribution will be on Saturday, July 11th at the Roanoke City Public Library’s Health Fair in Elmwood Park.  Helmet recipients must commit to wearing a properly adjusted helmet when riding a bicycle to receive a helmet.
