Mayor’s Secretary to Read Statement at Council Meeting Today

Joyce Johnson, 64, will read a statement at the 2:00 PM Council Meeting against the process used that eliminated her position as the Mayor’s secretary.

Johnson has the secretary’s position until July 1st.  Johnson reports to the City Clerk, Stephanie Moon. According to Moon Moon,  the Mayor’s work will be performed by other staff in the clerk’s office. Moon said a position had to be cut and the Mayor’s secretary position had the least impact.

Johnson will have an opportunity for other positions within the city and be placed in a pool with other applicants who’s positions have been eliminated. Johnson said it is unfair to other supervisors to train her for only ONE year for another available position until she reaches retirement at 65.

Johnson started in July of 1997 with Bowers’ first term as Mayor serving through the terms of Ralph Smith, Nelson Harris, and now  back to Mayor Bowers.

The citizens of Roanoke elected a Mayor.
A full time secretary is needed to support the Mayor’s duties and ceremonial responsibilities. The citizen’s of Roanoke need access to members of council.

It would cost more to train someone else to do the job of Mayor’s secretary.

This “reassignment” is politically motivated. Stop it.

Politically motivated? You mean that the city clerk eliminated the position of assistant to the mayor for political reasons?

Please expound on that. What political benefit is it to the city clerk?

From Johnson’s statement at Council and transcribed here she concludes that the City Clerk was pressured by other Council members she would not name. That is her contention whether perceived or factual.

Paul what’s in yer shine? Johnson as long been known to be an “operative” in leaking stuff to the public that should be known but them ther political types on council don’t want out. Where exactly do you reckon that stuff on Dowe came from? A little mouse in council chambers? And there’s are a variety of other things that follow the cheese back to Johnson, most of it having happened under the past mayor Rev harris. So the way I see it the likes of Cutler, Mason, and Lea are headin’ up the suspect list of those motivated by politics. You gotta be kiddin’ to feel that there is any consideration to what’s good for Roanoke or what will help the mayor. Actually, a lot of people want hissoner Bowers to fumble and bumble his way through his term to make him look totally like a failure. The old Roanoke Times is hugh on that list! Wake up Paul my man and smell the bull!
