Council candidate forums before election day

At a special meeting of the Roanoke Central Council PTA on Wednesday, April 28 Roanoke City Council candidates made their case on how they plan to fund education in Roanoke City. The three Democrats: Ray Ferris, Bill Bestpitch, incumbent David Trinkle – the three Republicans: Colonel Bob Craig, Mike Powell, and Tony Walker – and Independent Carl Cooper each had seven minutes to present their ideas at the William Fleming High School auditorium.

The candidates were challenged to present creative funding methods and faulting Virginia legislators was off the table.

The seven minutes was devoted entirely to education with time deducted if they strayed from the topic. There were no questions taken from attendees or any debate allowed.

On Thursday, April 29 Jay Warren anchor for WSLS channel 10 will moderate a Roanoke City Council forum at the Higher Education Center in the Claude Moore Building beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Roanoke Chapter of the NAACP is hosting the debate with a reception that will begin at 6:00 p.m.
