Countryside Swim Club Slideshow

Countryside Swim Club 1985

The pool served the children of the county before annexation brought them into the city in the early 70s. The parents and children of northwest city would gather at the pool on hot days in their usual neighborly communal fashion through the 80s and 90s. All that changed when the pool closed in 2003 and the water sat stagnating. Little did they know negotiations were going on between the city and the owners of the golf course, pool and tennis building. No need for the owners to maintain a pool.

Much has been said about the reasons but nothing excuses the lack of neglect following the purchase of the facilities by Roanoke City in 2005. High end homes by Toll Brothers was the plan. They said “no thank you” at first sight of the property divided by the airport clear zone. The city had no plan “B”, performed no due diligence before purchase of the property, and certainly no consideration for the community that enjoyed the amenities for 40 years.

Thanks goes to Becky Johnson for scanning these photos showing just one of the many birthday parties held at the pool. There were long-gown parties for the adults too.

When will they ever learn … when will they really ever learn?
