Democratic council sweep but two Republicans will run again

Republicans Mike Powell and Tony Walker

It was all over but the crying or in some cases the drinking Tuesday night. The results were quick to come in and by 8:00 it was clear that the Roanoke City Council election was another Democratic sweep.

At Fork in the City gathered Bob Craig and Tony Walker with their supporters. Craig though glum was gracious in his congratulations to the Democratic victors. Craig received the highest percentage of the Republican vote at 14.47% just shy of Democrat Bill Bestpitch’s 16.67%.

Craig in a statement said, “he thought that Mr. Trinkle and Mr. Ferris ran excellent and honest campaigns.” He said he had learned much. He wished all the new council members well as they serve the citizens of Roanoke.

Later Craig joined the Democrats following through with his best wishes for the victors. The Democrats assembled at 202 Market in downtown Roanoke.

Tony Walker who garnered 10.19% of the vote thought it had been an energetic race and that he and his fellow Republicans got their message of “strong fiscal management out to the voters.” Walker too said he learned much about the process.

Walker later joined his Republican running mate Mike Powell at the Meze in downtown Roanoke. Powell who received 12.68% of the vote confirmed that both he and Walker plan to run again in two years.

Powell said he was “a little disappointed that the city voted in all Democrats again.” He had hoped that at least one of the Republicans would make it on council. He also hopes that the city would fare better in the next two years but “with the Democratic philosophy I don’t expect it to,” said Powell.

Independent Carl Cooper received 3.61% of the vote. See results HERE.
