These two contested Democratic Primary races were not as close as predicted.

Incumbent Delegate Onzlee Ware won handily with 68% of the vote against challenger Martin Jeffrey. Jeffrey’s campaign lacked the funds to mount a formattable campaign and it remains to be seen if attention was diverted from the issues due to the assault charges filed by campaign manager, Mark Powell against Roanoke City Democratic Chair, Tony Reed. The campaign finance review before the State Board of Elections though a separate issue has yet to be resolved regarding Ware’s campaign expenditures. Ware will face Republican candidate, Troy Byrd in November.

Frank Garrett easily won against challenger Joe Bush with 65% of the vote for Roanoke City Sheriff. Garrett had the funds for TV commercials and substantially outspent Bush. Democrat Garrett will face independent Brian Keenum in November and incumbent Republican Sheriff Octavia Johnson. It was expected that Norman Hudson, nephew of former Sheriff Alvin Hudson would announce his independent bid for Sheriff following the primary.
