Deputy Frank Garrett Announces for Sheriff

Democrat Frank Garrett will oppose Republican incumbent Sheriff Octavia Johnson in the November elections. Garrett is a 30-year veteran law enforcement officer living in Roanoke City. He served almost 25 years with the City of Roanoke police department and has 5 years in as a Deputy Sheriff. He sees his 25 years as a police officer as a huge asset for leadership.

“Kids are at the top of my list,” said Garrett. It may not be a normal role for a sheriff but by working with the elementary schools he hopes that they never see the inside of his jail. Garrett would like to expand this program as resources permit. Garrett says that the 6 elementary schools he works with will give him a large base of supporters. Garrett had just spent the entire day at Oakland where he teaches classes and helps with discipline and community problems. He said he feels just like another staff member at the school. He is rarely in the jail where 700 inmates are housed. With 700 inmates it is like a “mini city …there is a lot of waste,” said Garrett. He would like to see instituted a recycling program if it is not cost prohibitive. Garrett would also like to see more fuel-efficient vehicles used by the department. He is “a kid friendly green earth kind of guy.” Admittedly Garrett said, “he is going to be a little different.”
