With time constraints at Monday’s briefing, Chris Chittum, Roanoke City Planning Department gave a quick presentation on the boundaries of 4 downtown districts and 2 future district.

The six districts that would be marketed and recognized as specific places were: Market, Financial, Warehouse, Rail, Courthouse, and Uptown. They would have distinct signs, street fixtures, a graphic identity, and kiosks.

Though Council endorsed 3 districts previously another district, West Station, was recommended.  The study was coordinated with Downtown Roanoke, Inc., and door-to-door canvassing of businesses.

Implementation ideas included logo branding, letterhead, marketing material, business signs, walking tours, and events.

Chittum asked Council’s concurrence on the boundaries of the Art District pictured here.

All members of Council were agreeable after asking a few minor questions. Vice-Mayor Sherman Lea asked about a Gainsboro District. Chittum said that would be forthcoming after the intial districts are firmed up.
