Gov. McDonnell’s reaction to George Allen leaving politics

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement this morning regarding comments by former Virginia Governor and Senator George Allen that he will not seek political office again.

“I was disappointed to learn that George Allen will not seek political office again. I’ve had the honor of knowing George for two decades now. He is a great friend. And I sincerely hope, as George exits from political life, that all Virginians will remember the incredible service he has given to our Commonwealth.

George will go down in history as one of the most influential and successful governors Virginia has ever known. He abolished parole and made our communities safer. He strengthened academic standards and made our schools better. He reformed welfare and made our society stronger. And he oversaw economic expansion across the state that made Virginia an even better place to call home. He was equally successful in improving the lives of all Virginians during his service as a delegate, Congressman and Senator.

George’s accomplishments in elected office have been replicated in his personal life. He is rightfully known as a good, honest, hard working person and a wonderful father and husband.

We’re going to miss George Allen in Virginia politics. For two decades he played a leading and pivotal role in making Virginia such a great place to start a business, raise a family and call home. Even though George Allen’s political career has ended, I sincerely hope that his contributions to the well-being of the Commonwealth and all our citizens will continue for years to come. I wish George, and his wonderful wife Susan, the very best moving forward, and I congratulate them for years of service, faithfully executed and well done. Virginia is a better place for it.”
