Letter to the editor – McDonnell’s view of offshore drilling is lacking

In the May 27th article titled “McDonnell: Outright cancellation of offshore drilling unnecessary,” the Governor talks of the spirit of American progress. I agree wholeheartedly with this concept, however, the direction in which to take the innovation of a nation in offshore drilling and describing it to “overcome adversity and innovation” seems lacking.

Advancing America to rid its dependence on foreign oil through continued efforts in alternative energy and aggressive research into sustainable bio-fuels is imperative. Furthermore, the thousands of jobs created through these efforts alone would justify pursuing alternative energy avenues in this economy.

From coastal fishermen to the thousands who are currently employed through oil companies drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, their way of life is currently under jeopardy due to the explosion on Deepwater Horizon. If this event has shown us anything about how companies like BP operate, it is that the bottom line is of their utmost importance; seemingly more important than the people of the United States.

It is up to us to find a better way and I urge President Obama to ban offshore drilling in new areas and lead the change for a clean energy economy.
