Long line at Peters Creek Precinct on election day

An unexpected long line awaited me at Roanoke’s Peters Creek Precinct Tuesday. Struggled to find a parking place. If you were an A-K last name the line went to the gym door.

There were many doing a write in since Bob Goodlatte had no Democratic opponent. There was Bain (Libertarian) and Venke (Independent). This precinct is heavily Democratic.

The electoral workers confirmed the line was to the door all day. They did not expect the turnout and there were only four voting machines. Many voters in line said they were there for the referendums.

I heard that some were looking for Perriello or Boucher names since all the TV ads filled the local station airways.

Here are a few pictures I took of the long line at about 5:00 p.m. at the former Ruffner Middle school gym.

On thing that I noticed in one of the photos. The voting booths are turned so people can look and see how a voter is voting. I work as a election officer in Floyd and we have always been trained to turn the booths toward a wall to give the voter some privacy.

I’ve been voting there for 11 years and as far as I can remember they have always been positioned that way.

You are right though I could not see anyone’s vote … I heard a lot of write in talking and instruction.

There was confusion with no Democratic candidate on the ballot. They were wanting to vote for Perriello.
