No New Taxes Says Roanoke City Council

An increase in the meals and lodging tax did not materialize Monday morning at the continued budget discussion. The mounted patrol is still temporarily (they hope) being put out to pasture. Added in was maintenance and repair to open only the Fallon Park pool for the summer in hopes of partnering with the Gator Aquatic Center to negate operating costs. Washington Park pool will remain closed in anticipation of turning it into a regional aquatics center.

Fee revisions included increase in parking garage rates. The market building lot will charge $2 to park after 9:00 PM instead of 4:00 PM with daily rate increase of $1 for the Market, Williamson, Elmwood, and Warehouse Row lots. Weekly rate increases for Gainsboro Garage and Higher Education Center Lot – $10. Warehouse Row – $7.50 and Elmwood and Market – $7.00.

The result of all fee increases even with backing off the deep cuts for Youth Services, REMS, and the Fallon pool led to some left-over pocket change in the amount of $103,873. Much better than the $1.9 million gap. This should be it, sighed Sherman Stovall, director of management and budget but added as a caveat “unless something happens.”
