Republican Party of Virginia Chairman John Whitbeck covering bases on both Democratic primary candidates with video trackers. Trackers follow candidate around making videos hoping to catch opposition candidates in a macaca moment.

Primary candidate Tom Perriello slipped a bit when comparing the election of President Trump to the 9/11 terrorist attack of New York City’s twin towers. Perriello said Trump’s election was “a little bit like, you know, a political and constitutional September 11.”  (See the video below)

Perriello apologized for the comparison today on Twitter saying he would not do it again.

Lt. Governor Ralph Northam, Perriello’s opponent for the Democratic nomination stated that “those are certainly not the words I would use, and I think the analogy is awful and offensive. However, Donald Trump’s first month is proof his policies will hurt Virginia’s families. From the outrageous Muslim Ban to his promise to defund Planned Parenthood and attacks on women’s reproductive rights, his administration has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.”

Whitbeck jumped on Perriello’s comparison saying in an email, “To say this is an offensive statement doesn’t do it justice. Virginia came under attack on 9/11, and many Virginians lost their lives. Countless more lives were disrupted as mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters never returned home. If Tom Perriello truly thinks that a Presidential election that didn’t go his way is the equivalent of a terror attack that killed more than 3,000 people, it raises serious questions about his fitness for office.”

“We know that Democrats have become unhinged since President Trump took office, but this is beyond the pale. Tom Perriello owes an apology to the survivors of 9/11, the loved ones of those lost that day, and to the entire Commonwealth of Virginia. “

A June primary will determine the Democratic candidate to face a Republican gubernatorial candidate likely to be Ed Gillespie. Perriello is challenging Lt. Gov. Ralph S. Northam in the Democratic primary.
