Roanoke City Democratic reorganization members predetermined

Commonwealth Attorney, Don Caldwell is Chair

Commonwealth Attorney, Don Caldwell is Chair

THURSDAY NIGHT TWEETS BELOW – At the Roanoke City Democratic Committee reorganization Thursday night the rules were passed out with an attachment. The attachment had a list of “suggested” members who should be voted into the committee. The new Democratic chair is Roanoke Commonwealth Attorney, Don Caldwell.

The districts were reduced from eleven to six which left fewer membership openings in the heavily diverse Northwest district. The predetermined list left little decision for nominations from the floor.

There were a few exceptions. Mark Powell was able to gain District Leader for the East district and Mayor David Bowers who ran as an independent was voted in the same district as a member-at-large. It left little to the imagination on who would be running for city council.

The dates for the Democratic primary have been held closely to the vest. Filings have to be completed by January 4 for a March 2 primary.

In a phone call Greg Habeeb Chair of the Salem Republican Committee was baffled by the Democrat’s process. Habeeb said the Salem Republican Committee has no maximum membership limitations. Anyone who wants to join is welcome. Calls for a quorum are rare if ever and business is conducted with members present.

Vivian J. Paige vpaige @ValerieInRke what? The committee isn’t open to everyone?

@ValerieInRke you need to take that to the DPVA. This kind of stuff has got to stop.

@SeanHolihan @isaacsarver there’s a fix: have a standard set of bylaws for ALL committees. This crap has to stop.

So, this is the condition that the Democratic Party of Roanoke City has devolved. Even during the time when Alvin Hudson was strong, the sheriff and his gang never displayed this type of incompetence and arrogance. This is disgraceful for a city as heavily Democratic as Roanoke City is and should be investigated by the state party. A list of “suggested” members? WTF!!! Don Caldwell should be embarrassed and ashamed to hold the office of the highest judicial office in the city and be associated with this sham of an election.

No, the list for Northwest was predetermined. I could howver try to get on in another district with open slots in a few months. I don’t plan to join. This is the third reorg that has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Everyone who comes in the door, signs an oath to be a Democrat and is a registered voter in the City should be welcomed into the committee. Until that day happens (not holding my breath) you won’t see me there ever again.

It’s all about control and not about inclusion.

Expect editorials from former vice-chair who no longer lives in the city. This is a disgrace and should be bought to the state party’s attention. For all the ridicule we give Republicans and the way they exclude people, these types of actions are dispicable and dishonorable. Don Caldwell has lost all of his integrity and honor; he has joined the list of dishonorable people who have sought to limit and control legitimate thought and debate. The Democratic Party has long stood for inclusion and openness. This harkens back to the “smoke-filled rooms” days of party bosses getting together and mapping out a course of action that only suits themselves. Everyone who signed up to be a part of this has the shame of exclusion and corruption on their chests. This goes back to when Fannie Lou Hamer forced the Democrats to seat her and her delegation at the national convention, because of the bigots that were conspiring to keep them out. This group, Caldwell, Ware, Reed, and others have sunk lower than a snake’s belly.

Valerie ran for a seat but was not elected. Period. If her own neighbors won’t elect her she shouldn’t then complain about it as though she couldn’t have been elected. She gained 6 votes total in her entire region. Period. I watched.

I didn’t bring anyone at all. Either there was going to be a united committee or not. I appreciate Brenda Hamilton (Clerk of Court) voting for me and the others that raised their hand with her.

“Don Caldwell has lost his integrity and honor”?

Since when did he have any ?

The City of Roanoke has become nothing more than a “police State” gulag run at the pleasure of Carilion and SR Elites.
As for The Democratic Party in Roanoke ?
Like everthing else in the city,
it is a complete joke.

So you people have two choices,
1) DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
2) WHINE while you continue being screwed.
