FROM TIFFANY WOODS, Public Relations Director: This year most RCPS schools are fully accredited, a sign of tremendous progress for the entire school division. Lucy Addison Middle School is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education for the first time in the school’s history. Principal Robert Johnson says, “This is a huge milestone for our students, teachers and faculty. We have worked so hard each year to become fully accredited and now our persistence and determination has finally paid off. I want to thank everyone on the Addison team, from students to teachers, for realizing their potential and working hard to achieve academic success.”

In all, 23 of the 25 schools in Roanoke City are fully accredited for the 2009-10 academic year. William Fleming High School’s accreditation status is listed as TBD and Westside Elementary is accredited with warning. A school’s state accreditation rating reflects overall achievement in English, history/social science, mathematics and science. Schools in which students meet or exceed achievement benchmarks established by the Virginia Board of Education in these four major content areas are rated as Fully Accredited.

Superintendent Dr. Rita Bishop says, “We are pleased to see so many of our schools making gains and meeting state accreditation standards. We are also equally proud of schools that continue to earn full accreditation year after year. Our teachers and faculty believe in our vision to become a model for urban public education and they are committed to setting high academic standards for our students. Our goal is to eventually see every school fully accredited in Roanoke City. This year we will remain vigilant in our efforts to provide staff and administrators with the educational resources they need in the classroom so our students will be successful.”

Lucy Addison Middle School is planning an accreditation ceremony next month where they will unveil the new accreditation banner for the school.
