Governor Terry McAuliffe today vetoed six pieces of legislation that would undermine support for Virginia’s public education system.
House Bill 1400
Governor Terry McAuliffe vetoed House Bill 1400, which would create a new executive branch agency known as the Virginia Virtual School. This entity, governed by an independent policy board, would facilitate the provision of full-time, online education programs for students throughout Virginia.
This bill is virtually identical to HB 8 (2016). The Office of the Attorney General advised that HB 8 was unconstitutional; consequently, I vetoed it.
In establishing the Virginia Virtual School outside of the jurisdiction of the Board of Education, and
So far Bell and Smith have been debating at a distance. Well actually Bell has been debating with Smith who so far has avoided direct confrontation with his Independent opponent. Sen. Smith is using the “ignore your opponent” campaign tactic. Whether this is a “winning” strategy for Smith only time will tell. Bell has prodded Smith just about as much as he can at this point. Senator Bell released the following statement today:
My opponent Ralph Smith has spent the entirety of this campaign hiding from the voters, ignoring questions about his failed record, failing to pay personal property taxes and lying about living in the 19th Senate District. By refusing to answer for his actions, my opponent has shown his cowardice as a candidate and an unbelievable level of disrespect for the voters in the 19th District.
Back in September, I challenged my opponent to 5 debates. These debates would have given the voters an opportunity to hear the ideas of both candidates and decide for themselves who is best suited to be their next Senator. Unfortunately my opponent refused to accept this challenge and arrogantly ignores those he seeks to represent.
The voters of the 19th Senate District want to know why Ralph Smith is lying about living in the District. They want to know why he is a tax cheat who has failed to pay his personal property taxes to Roanoke County. The voters want to know why he hasn’t sponsored a single piece of legislation to address our jobs crisis. They want to know why he has never voted for a budget to fund transportation, public safety and education. These are questions that the voters have a right to ask and my opponent has an obligation to answer.
I have specifically challenged my opponent to attend the Montgomery County League of Women Voters Forum on Thursday, October 27th. This is one of the last opportunities we will have to jointly face the voters before November 8th. Ralph Smith needs to stop lying about where he really lives and answer questions about his personal property taxes and his failed record in the VA Senate
