Senator Bell challenges Senator Smith to debate

Sen. Brandon Bell wants debate with Sen. Ralph Smtih

Sen. Brandon Bell in his official announcement as an Independent for the 19th Senate District challenged Sen. Ralph Smith to debate him in a “real Q & A” type debate. Bell again is pushing for Smith to debate him in the press release issued below.

In a recent e-mail sent to the Ralph Smith Senate campaign today, Senator Brandon Bell has invited Senator Ralph Smith to a total of five debates. The e-mail sent addresses the following information:

  • The voters in the 19th senate district deserve to hear directly from both candidates who wish to represent them in Richmond. The recent redistricting has created a large and diverse district. Senator Bell believes these five live debates will provide an opportunity to reach as many constituents as possible throughout the area which covers most of Roanoke County, the City of Salem, and Floyd County, parts of Wythe, Franklin, Bedford, Montgomery and Carroll Counties.
  • Senator Bell looks forward to working with organizations that want to hear from both candidates. Groups are needed who are willing to provide a fair and impartial moderator, as well as fair location for the debates. Additionally, Senator Bell wishes to work with Senator Smith’s campaign to ensure that these debates are held by mutually agreed upon rules.
  • Senator Bell’s objective is to provide voters with thoughtful discussions regarding the issues that matter most. Through these debates, the constituents of the 19th senate district will have the opportunity to hear what the candidates have to say regarding fundamental, yet critical issues which directly affect the voters. Senator Bell looks forward to distinguishing himself, in Richmond, as the true independent voice of the 19th senate district.

It’s clear to me that all Bell is doing here is seeking publicity. I hope Ralph Smith does not afford him that luxury. If I had a record like Brandon, I’d avoid the press like the plague.

If one candidate doesn’t want to debate another, it appears he is afraid of the strength of his opponent. I want the chance to watch a debate, and not just vote for a name I see on yard signs.

Why is it that Ralph supporters turn their noses down at the idea of a debate? Why not let the voters hear from both candidates? If Ralph is going to win by such huge margins, what are they worried about? Could it be that their candidate will perform poorly? If they have ever heard Ralph speak, their fear is certainly justified. Regardless of which candidate you are backing, the voters in the 19th district deserve to hear from both candidates. Let’s debate!
