On Sunday Mayor David Bowers sang a variety of songs before settling on an old tune by Frank Sinatra. Bowers modified the lyrics a bit to fit the occasion to the delight of everyone in the congregation. Bowers sang his rendition of Sinatra’s “Thanks for the Memories” and received a standing ovation afterwards. Bowers then proclaimed the day for Dr. Edward T. Burton

Dr. Edward T. Burton, Pastor of Sweet Union Baptist Church on Madison Avenue celebrated 50 years of leading his members. Sunday culminated a 3-Day Jubilee. Burton will retire after his last message to his church family next Sunday, March 29th. He came to Sweet Union in March of 1959 after receiving his Master of Divinity Degree at Virginia Union University in Richmond and serving as pastor in Chesterfield and Richmond. Honors and awards filled an entire page in tiny print. Deputy Chief Ralph Tartaglia honored Rev. Burton on Friday night for his service as Chaplain for Roanoke Valley Fire EMS.

Saturday night the Roanoke Special Events Center was filled to capacity. Officials attending the Jubilee were Congressman Bob Goodlatte, Senator John Edwards, Delegate Onzlee Ware, Council members, Anita Price, Gwenn Mason and Court Rosen.

The keynote speaker was Dr. John Kinney, Dean and Professor of Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology, Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia.
