Taubman Museum and RCPS present museum career day

Taubman_schoolsThe Taubman Museum of Art and Roanoke City Public Schools are proud to present the third annual 555XXL museum career day. Through this successful partnership Roanoke City rising 6th graders are able to experience a behind-the-scenes look at how a museum operates, learn about career options, meet staff, and participate in an art project at the Taubman Museum.

Students participating in the Roanoke City Public Schools camp will have the opportunity to come to the museum on a Monday, a day when the museum is closed to the public, and explore aspects of museum operations that an everyday visitor would not see. Students will be given a tour of the museum’s vault, learn how exhibits are designed, and visit maintenance areas to understand how the building operates. Students will learn first hand from museum staff and have the opportunity to meet the museum’s executive director, Della Watkins.

In addition to exploring the museum, students will participate in interactive activities, including an art project in which they imagine and design their own museum. The “Design a Museum” art project is taught by Roanoke City School art instructors, giving students the opportunity to design and create a 3 – D museum that illustrates each of the following museum careers they explore:

  • Executive Director
  • Education
  • Customer Relations
  • Facilities
  • Exhibition Design and Installation
  • Curator(s)
  • CFO/COO (Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer)
  • Marketing and Fundraising
  • Registrar
  • Museum Shop and Café

During the Roanoke City Public School camp, students select career areas they are interested in and are able to explore different fields such as Culinary Arts, Teaching, Automotive Technology, Engineering, Construction, Medicine, Cosmetology, and TV Broadcasting and Production. The weeklong program culminates in the museum tour where all students participate for free. This unique opportunity is made possible by coordination between museum staff, volunteers, and Roanoke City Public Schools. This will mark the third year of the successful collaboration and 225 rising 6th graders are expected to attend the event.

The Taubman Museum of Art and Roanoke City Public Schools Museum career day will be Monday, July 15, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Lunch and transportation from Elementary Summer School sites are provided.
