Twitter was on fire with VA Governor Bob McDonnell’s impending resignation

The conservative blog Bearing Drift lit up Twitter on Saturday night. Blogger Ben Tribbett of the notlarrysabato blog tweeted that Bearing Drift’s Willie Deutsch was reporting “the Governor is about to resign.”

Deutsch said the “governor is currently in the middle of finalizing a plea agreement which includes his resignation as governor. ” Later he said he was becoming more certain of it as he talked to other sources.

Larry Sabato, director at UVA Center for Politics who said he usually doesn’t get involved in rumors but since this had gone so viral tweeted, “Gov. Bob McDonnell is NOT resigning. I have checked. That is official. Irresponsible rumors are wrong.”

Later he tweeted that, “Reporters, bloggers & others have a clear responsibility to check rumors out fully before publishing/airing.”

Even our Roanoke WDBJ7 anchor Chris Hurst got in the mix later tweeting “If anyone wants to blame me for contributing to a hour of confusion, I’m ready for your tomatoes.”

The speculation continued even when McDonnell’s spokesman, Tucker Martin tweeted that it was “false.” Bearing Drift is still not backing down and comments continue speculating on resignation due to the ongoing FBI investigation of McDonnell and Star Scientific.

Comments range from questioning what this means for Lt. Governor Bill Bolling and Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli. The thought is that though McDonnell’s office denied an impending resignation that it WOULD be denied as negotiations continue.

At this point Bearing Drift is not backing down from their sources. Time will tell but as Sabato said, “check rumors out fully.”

This is irresponsible and ill founded reporting!

This is reporting on the hasty reporting on twitter and a warning on what to take as fact there.

As I understand it, Bearing Drift and notlarrysabato are generally regarded as reputable sources of whispers from behind the veil of high-intensity government. The denials by the shill in the Governor’s office is expected in a story such as this. Sabato’s rebuke is interesting. Could it be a defensive ploy?

As for whether or not the embattled governor will resign to avoid formal criminal charges in “Star-Gate” is not officially unknown at this time. As information consumers, we have to become more savvy about what we consume.

The fact is, however, that a free press is a fundamental and liberating component in the foundation of our democracy. Blogs, tweets, and digital content developers, like this site, are the latest evolutionary expression of that fundamental right.

As my sweet mother likes to say to me when she’s being especially stubborn, “I’s gots the right.” It’s our job as citizens, however, to be the final filter.

Yes especially Bearing Drift is regarded as reputable. It makes it particularly disheartening if untrue but what a scoop if it proves to be true down the road.
