Governor Terry McAuliffe today vetoed six pieces of legislation that would undermine support for Virginia’s public education system.
House Bill 1400
Governor Terry McAuliffe vetoed House Bill 1400, which would create a new executive branch agency known as the Virginia Virtual School. This entity, governed by an independent policy board, would facilitate the provision of full-time, online education programs for students throughout Virginia.
This bill is virtually identical to HB 8 (2016). The Office of the Attorney General advised that HB 8 was unconstitutional; consequently, I vetoed it.

Roanoke, VA – Senator Mark Warner has issued a statement supporting Sam Rasoul’s candidacy for Delegate. This announcement comes as Rasoul unveils the major focus of his first term, working to bridge the gap between educators and the business community so to help grow businesses in the Roanoke Valley.

Rasoul said, “I am humbled by Senator Warner’s endorsement and I look forward to serving in Richmond to help grow our economy in the Roanoke Valley. Something I am very passionate about is bridging the gap between our schools and the needs of the business community.” Rasoul continued, “As Delegate, I want to do more to empower our educators to be able to implement programs that provide job-ready skills upon graduation. This way our businesses can hire local students who are ready to start their career after High School or Community College.”
Sam Rasoul was raised in Roanoke. He comes from a family of small business owners and owns a local business himself. Sam has spent the last decade working in non-profit healthcare. Sam and his wife, Layaly, have three children.
